Samurai traveling in human powered sedan chairs or palanquin called "norimono" had a variety of small weapons available to them for use in defense, hunting or recreation. Norimono were the samurai type of kago (litter), these small enclosed vehicles had no room for standard sized yumi (bow), yari (spear) or tanegashina (matchlock) and small versions of these weapons were developed.
According to the Royal Armouries, these small yumi were invented by Riman Hayashi of Kii province and are called kago hankyu, also known as a riman kyu after the originator. blog.royalarmouries.org/2011/08/24/a-short-sharp-shock/
Kago yumi have been described as being constructed with whale bone (baleen) and horn, a fuul set includes a kago yebira (quiver), kago ya (arrows) as well as a bow.
